# More Reach Isn’t Always More Growth: The Case for Targeted Business Development

 By  [Kevin Corrigan](https://tkd2group.com/blog/author/kc)  ·   2 minute read

In business development, it’s easy to confuse activity with progress.

More contacts. More emails. More meetings. A longer pipeline.

Those numbers have a place. But our experience has been that some of the best opportunities come from focusing on a small number of customers, understanding them deeply, and introducing the right manufacturing partners.

That starts with a different question.

Instead of asking, “Who can we sell this client to?” we ask, “Where do we understand the customer well enough to identify a credible fit?”

## Start with the customer—and qualify the fit

Knowing a customer means more than having names in a database. It means understanding how purchasing and engineering work together, how suppliers are evaluated, and where a new company could realistically participate.

It also means having relationships that support a substantive conversation: a face-to-face meeting, an onsite visit, an introduction to the right technical team.

Access creates the opening. Experience helps determine whether an introduction makes sense.

A manufacturer’s product, capacity, size, quality certifications, engineering resources and production footprint all matter. A capable supplier might be well suited to support a customer through a Tier 1, while a direct relationship would be difficult to justify.

Making that distinction early helps everyone spend time on opportunities that have a sound foundation.

## What a focused engagement can look like

One of our current client engagements is focused on a single customer.

That may sound narrow compared with a campaign targeting hundreds of companies. Yet the engagement is progressing well because it concentrates our work where we have strong relationships and relevant experience.

The focus allows us to develop a clearer understanding of the customer’s needs, assess where the client fits, and build the right conversations.

We also support clients whose growth requires opening unfamiliar accounts through cold outreach. That work has value, but in our experience it naturally takes longer to mature. We must establish access, understand the organization, uncover requirements and qualify the opportunity—often at the same time.

An unanswered introduction provides very little information about whether a commercial fit exists.

## The advantages—and the tradeoffs

A targeted approach offers several advantages:

- **Better qualification.** Conversations can address specific capabilities, requirements and sourcing structures.
- **More useful introductions.** The reason for bringing two companies together is easier to explain.
- **Greater continuity.** Repeated engagement helps build understanding across purchasing, engineering and operations.
- **More productive use of technical resources.** Suppliers can assess relevant applications instead of responding to loosely defined interest.

There are limitations, too.

Concentrating on a few accounts increases exposure to their budgets, program timing and personnel changes. Strong relationships can become outdated. Familiarity can create blind spots, and access does not guarantee an RFQ or an award.

A focused strategy therefore needs periodic reassessment—and enough new-account development to avoid depending entirely on existing relationships.

## Where AI changes the equation

My view is that AI will put increasing pressure on business models built primarily around high-volume prospecting. Finding names, producing introductory messages and organizing follow-ups are becoming easier to automate.

Customer judgment is a different challenge.

Understanding when an introduction is appropriate, recognizing a supplier’s limitations, and earning the opportunity for a candid technical discussion depend on experience and trust. Those are the capabilities we believe deserve continued investment.

For us, the strongest business development combines focused account work with selective outreach. The balance depends on the client, the customer and the strength of the fit.

We want to be measured by the quality of the commercial relationships we help build—and the business those relationships ultimately support.
